What is this about?
The FuseBox is Wired Sussex’s innovation centre. It is a hub for digital innovators, tech visionaries and creative technologists and provides access to spaces, facilities, opportunities and expertise.
The FuseBox is a place where knowledge and practices from the arts and design mesh with new technologies, and where innovators can be supported and can support each other.
It delivers learning through doing, demonstrating and testing; and believes in better innovation through collaboration.
What has happened so far?
The FuseBox first opened its doors in 2013 and took inspiration (and its name!) from the Brighton Fuse research projects. This research demonstrated the many ways in which the fusion of creative practice and technology was central to innovation and growth in our regional digital sector.
Since then, we’ve supported a range of innovation programmes, assisting businesses in our region to get new products, services and experiences out into the world. The establishment of the 5G Brighton testbed was a major milestone and achievement, leading to ground-breaking work with the music industry, and culminating in the 5G Festival at Brighton Dome.
The FuseBox currently houses the Brighton Immersive Lab and the 5G Brighton testbed, supporting a number of programmes. We have a diverse cohort of residents, including generative artists, creative technologists, fashion designers, filmmakers and developers working in VR and AR.
What is planned?
The FuseBox is open to individuals, start-ups, small teams and those developing new digital products or services at existing businesses. If you have an idea that you want to develop, find out about our residency programme. We welcome those with any creative or tech idea, but some of the areas that others at the FuseBox are currently working on include:
- Immersive: Virtual and Augmented Reality
- Virtual Production and Createch
- Connected: 5G, edge computing and the Internet of Things
- Intelligent: Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning
- Data: Big Data and Data Visualisation tools
